I’m Chris Marrou. I was born in San Antonio, Texas. I lived most of my life there, I reported the news there for thirty-five years. I know the city and I can assure you it is currently being run by irresponsible people.
San Antonio got a huge amount of rain last week. Heavy rains in San Antonio can cause flooding because the city is right on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. But the most recent rains killed at least eleven people, and local fire department officers believe there may be four more bodies somewhere.
This is nuts. One or two people might die in a bad flood, but fifteen? That’s prima facie evidence of incompetence, right there. Dangerous low-water crossings don’t just spring up like mushrooms, people who design and build streets know exactly where they are. They know just how bad the threat can be, and sticking a sign in the ground warning about possible high water a couple of times a year does not get the city off the hook. If the city designed a “pretty good” sewage system that only killed a dozen people with cholera or typhoid fever at a time, no one would be saying that was okay. If there was a mass shooting that killed a dozen people every couple of years, people wouldn’t smile and nod at the police and wish them a nice day.
The city knows where those low water crossings are, and it has enough money to put in higher bridges. The people in charge just don’t want to. They’d rather spout socialist crapola and spend money on alcoholics, drug users and people who’ve come here illegally. Okay, what they actually do is hand out millions to political pals who SAY they’re going to take care of those people, but never seem to solve the problem.
For a few million the city could permanently fix problem areas like Perrin-Beitel and Austin Highway or Callaghan and Highway 90—out of a total city budget of four billion a year, but what’s the fun in doing what you’re supposed to do? You don’t get extra attention as a local politician for doing your job, so why bother doing it? Better to let San Antonio slide like Los Angeles, which gets so much attention from the media.
Our local city council members would rather spout Democratic talking points than actually solve problems. After all, problems mean you can always promise a fix in the future and you get to spend more tax money. A well-run city that heads off trouble before it happens doesn’t get headlines, so why should the council and county commissioners bother? Let’s just build another stadium for the Spurs and make the owners a little richer and taxpayers a little poorer. I’m Chris Marrou, and that’s Marrou on Media for June 15, 2025.
